with Chris Cozen from Golden

Friday, March 15, 2013 • 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Come explore this fascinating surface and see what happens when paint, collage, and water mingle on its surface. Yupo is a sturdy, extremely smooth surface that doesn't tear. We'll explore what happens when you draw on the surface with pencil and permanent marker. We'll mix up some watered down mixtures using Fluid acrylics with some interference colors and put it to the test. This process-based class is intended to open up your creative channels and get your mind thinking loosely and fluidly.
All you need to bring is yourself, an apron, a pencil and a permanent fine tip marker. Chris will provide the Yupo paper and all the paints you could possibly need.

Trained as an educator, Chris spent 30 years as teacher, administrator, college Instructor, and Seminar Leader doing art when the time and space allowed. When she retired from Education in 2000, she built a studio and focused her efforts full-time on her art.
Chris is essentially a self-taught artist with an innate understanding of color and design. Many of her pieces are "stories" of people and experiences, enriched with pieces of family history. She especially enjoys collage and assemblage as they allow her to incorporate into her work "treasures" she collects that help her tell a story. Both her mixed media canvases and her assemblages are colorful, whimsical, and intricate, building layer upon layer of meaning along with the color and collage elements. It is important to Chris that people engage with the story being told, even if they end up telling a different story than was in her mind when she began the piece.
Since 2000, Chris has exhibited in Memphis, Nashville, The A.E. Backus Gallery in Florida, and the Chapelle des Penitents in Callian, France. Her work is held in private collections in California, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Canada, Germany, France, Israel, and Norway. She has also written three books: Altered Surfaces, published in 2008, and Transfers & Altered Images, published in 2009, and Mixed Media and Color, published in 2010.
She is currently a member of Golden Artist Colors' Working Artist Program which was designed to provide artists with first hand experience of the variety of Golden acrylic products and their uses. Professional artists with extensive acrylic product training, such as Chris, conduct classes and demonstrations for artists and students working in acrylic or other media.

Layer Upon Layer: Putting Pattern & Color to Work on Your Surfaces with Chris Cozen from Golden
Saturday, March 16, 2013 • 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM (45 minute lunch break from 12:45-1:30)
Chris is finally going to show you her pattern layering techniques that everyone has been talking about lately! We will be using Fluid Acrylics and OPEN acrylics on Montval board (paper adhered to mat board). You will learn how to develop a complex layered surface that will be coaxed into a colorful and animated composition throughout the day.
Chris is bringing loads of new stencils to play with as well as all her old favorites. The surface will start with areas of light and dark. We'll work with stamps and some sheer collage as well. The OPEN acrylic applications will allow us to blend our edges, soften our transitions between color and pattern, and lend us a refined and smooth surface. You will love working on the amazing surface.
Bring a few favorite pieces of collage elements for color inspiration (5-10 only). Chris will provide boards for you to purchase at $3.00 (8 x 10) for the small or $6.00 (16 x 20) for the large.
Mad for Abstraction: Broad Strokes, Big Marks & Controlled Color with Chris Cozen from Golden
Sunday, March 17, 2013 • 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM (30 minute lunch break at 12:30)
Do you fear making that first stroke on a clean surface? If so, join Chris Cozen in this class and you will lose your inhibitions and become fearless in the face of a white surface.
Purchase one piece of 300 # watercolor paper before class and cut or tear it carefully into two equal pieces. These are the only surfaces we will be working with.
Every kind of acrylic paint will be in play for the day: Heavy Body, Fluid and OPEN. We'll work with palette knifes, brushes and some fancy new "tools" that Chris has discovered. Think color layering, mark-making, wild and crazy fun. We are keeping this class small so you can work BIG! Bring your fears and fearlessness to class for an amazing time.
