Divide and Conquer: Mixed Media Canvas!

Divide and Conquer: Mixed Media Canvas
with Chris Cozen from Golden

Sunday, July 22, 2012 • 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Learn how to create mixed media with a fresh contemporary style using clean, crisp lines, a soft color palette and bold graphic elements. Chris will take you through the steps and share her hand-cut botanical and garden stamps with you for this delightful and refreshing mixed media piece.
You will need to bring an 8x8 or 10x10 pre-gessoed cradleboard with you. These are available through Ampersand or Dick Blick, either brand will work. Canvas does not work as well for this process.
About Chris Cozen
Chris Cozen has always had a creative streak, dabbling throughout her youth without any formal training, taking a few design courses over the years. Trained as an educator, Chris spent 30 years as teacher, administrator, college Instructor, and Seminar Leader doing art when the time and space allowed. When she retired from Education in 2000, she built a studio and focused her efforts full-time on her art.
Chris is essentially a self-taught artist with an innate understanding of color and design. Many of her pieces are "stories" of people and experiences, enriched with pieces of family history. She especially enjoys collage and assemblage as they allow her to incorporate into her work "treasures" she collects that help her tell a story. Both her mixed media canvases and her assemblages are colorful, whimsical, and intricate, building layer upon layer of meaning along with the color and collage elements. It is important to Chris that people engage with the story being told, even if they end up telling a different story than was in her mind when she began the piece.
Since 2000, Chris has exhibited in Memphis, Nashville, The A.E. Backus Gallery in Florida, and the Chapelle des Penitents in Callian, France. Her work is held in private collections in California, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Canada, Germany, France, Israel, and Norway. She has also written three books: Altered Surfaces, published in 2008, and Transfers & Altered Images, published in 2009, and Mixed Media and Color, published in 2010.
She is currently a member of Golden Artist Colors' Working Artist Program which was designed to provide artists with first hand experience of the variety of Golden acrylic products and their uses. Professional artists with extensive acrylic product training, such as Chris, conduct classes and demonstrations for artists and students working in acrylic or other media.

Chris Cozen Class - Saturday July 21st!

Telling Our Stories, Sharing Our Hearts: Family History Canvases
with Chris Cozen from Golden

Saturday, July 21, 2012 • 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
This class is a "classic" Chris Cozen collage experience! Why keep all your photos of family stuck in drawers, in boxes, or worse yet on a computer? Drag out those images of your favorite family members past or present, take the photos to your local copy store and have them printed out on medium weight non-recycled paper. Create a pile of mementos to go with those images (ticket stubs, old hand-written notes, a saying, wrapping paper from a cherished gift). Bring all of this to class and then Chris will guide you through the process of creating your story and making it into art! How cool will it be to gather up members of the family across a few generations and have them all together again?
What about a special wedding anniversary, life event, or the story of two friends? There are many layers to our lives, let's weave them together beautifully. We all have so many stories to tell, why not take the time now to share them in this unique way?
Bring two or three gallery wrapped canvases or ampersand type cradle boards for the stories you want to tell. We'll finish them with a "faux-encaustic" mixture!
Chris will bring cradle boards with her for students who don't bring in their own. You can purchase them from her for $8 each.

Chris Cozen is coming to Stamping Details this weekend!!

The Abstract Garden: Contemporary Mixed Media Fun
with Chris Cozen from Golden

Friday, July 20, 2012 • 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Chris's garden is a constant inspiration to her and she plays with the shapes she sees in the flowers she grows there to develop simple and playful interpretations. We'll develop some rapid, colorful backgrounds then apply some paper elements, create our flower shapes and use our glazing techniques to refine and detail the piece.
You will need three 8x10 canvas boards and a white gel pen for this class.
