Explore the soft, diffused colors that can be achieved when OPEN acrylics are used on heavy papers. We'll work with brushes and palette knives, pencils and painting sticks. Chris will show you a range of techniques which can be used when working with OPEN on paper. You will learn when to seal the paper as well as how to make the paper's absorbency work for you.
Please bring along heavy duty water color paper or Canson Montval Acrylic Paper.

Age and Antiquity
with Chris Cozen from Golden
Saturday, October 27, 2012 • 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM (1 hour lunch break from 12:30-1:30)

Get out those jars of Molding and Crackle Paste for a quick trip back in time to medieval walls and ancient frescoes! We will explore numerous techniques and products which will give your mixed media pieces instant antiquity! We'll play with aging glazes and textural collage elements as well. Throughout the day we will be adding layers to a work in progress as we experiment with various techniques.
We'll be working on canvas, boards, and paper so bring a few small canvas boards or stretched canvas panels and a packet of 140# water color or Montval acrylic paper to class, as well as personal ephemera or collage papers appropriate to your theme.
Chris will bring a very limited supply of pre-gessoed cradle boards for purchase for $7.50 each. You may bring your own if desired.

Clearly Colorful Mixed Media

Sunday, October 28, 2012 • 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (45 minute lunch break from 1:00-1:45)

Explore collage, transfer, and painted elements on a transparent surface! Exercise your ability to think "inside-out" as you apply reverse collage techniques to transparent surfaces, both rigid and flexible. Explore the qualities of both transparent and opaque pigments and how they can be utilized to create exciting color blending opportunities even when utilizing a limited palette of colors. Get the inside scoop on both Interference and Iridescent Paints and utilize them to expand your color library. Walk out with two completed mixed media compositions on Plexiglas and sewable vinyl.
Chris will supply the paints and some collage elements.

About Chris Cozen:
Chris Cozen has always had a creative streak, dabbling throughout her youth without any formal training, taking a few design courses over the years. Trained as an educator, Chris spent 30 years as teacher, administrator, college Instructor, and Seminar Leader doing art when the time and space allowed. When she retired from Education in 2000, she built a studio and focused her efforts full-time on her art.

Chris is essentially a self-taught artist with an innate understanding of color and design. Many of her pieces are "stories" of people and experiences, enriched with pieces of family history. She especially enjoys collage and assemblage as they allow her to incorporate into her work "treasures" she collects that help her tell a story. Both her mixed media canvases and her assemblages are colorful, whimsical, and intricate, building layer upon layer of meaning along with the color and collage elements. It is important to Chris that people engage with the story being told, even if they end up telling a different story than was in her mind when she began the piece.

Since 2000, Chris has exhibited in Memphis, Nashville, The A.E. Backus Gallery in Florida, and the Chapelle des Penitents in Callian, France. Her work is held in private collections in California, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Canada, Germany, France, Israel, and Norway. She has also written three books: Altered Surfaces, published in 2008, and Transfers & Altered Images, published in 2009, and Mixed Media and Color, published in 2010.

She is currently a member of Golden Artist Colors' Working Artist Program which was designed to provide artists with first hand experience of the variety of Golden acrylic products and their uses. Professional artists with extensive acrylic product training, such as Chris, conduct classes and demonstrations for artists and students working in acrylic or other media.
